FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Houma, LA
6109 Hwy 311, Houma, Louisiana 70360            985/868-7787
Serving Your Church

Worship
> Lay reader - the lay reader leads the congregation in reading several items during the service; this may include prayers, responsive readings, scripture, etc.
> Communion server in church - you will go up to communion and hold the bread or cup of juice; there are 2 lines so we need 2 to hold the bread and 2 to hold the cups
> Bring communion to homebound - you will take some of the blessed bread and juice to people that could not make it to church
> Bake bread for communion - you can bake the bread used in communion; Robin Laird can supply the recip
> Create/repair paraments - sewing skills are needed to help keep paraments (that hang from the back of the chancel) in order; there may be opportunities to create new paraments
> Nursery helper - though we have a nursery worker, Safe Sanctuaries requires at least 2 adults to work with children; you will help to watch, read to, play with children and infants during the worship service
> Acolyte - acolytes light candles at the beginning of the service and extinguish them at the end; though our acolyte program isn't currently functioning, if there is enough response we would like to start it again
> Sound board - the sound mixer is located in the balcony; since most of the settings are fixed, there usually isn't too much to do (technically)
> Powerpoint - though we have someone (the Soules) doing PPT for the early service, we'd like somone doing the same for the 11 o'clock service
> Audio/Video - if someone can video a service, we can take videotapes to our homebound//shut-ins; the cameras are already set up, but some instruction will be necessary
> Drama - at times we would like to incorporate drama into worship, depending upon the volunteers that sign up

Music
> Sing (solo) - at times we would like/need people to perform songs
> Sing (small group) - do you want to start a small group that will sing on selected occassions?
> Sing, Chancel Choir - at 11am service (practice on Wednesdays at 7pm)

> Praise Team - at 8:45 service (practice on Thursdays at 5:30pm)
> Play an Instrument: - the early service uses instruments on a regular basis; there may also be opportunities at the 11 o'clock service
> Bell Choir -  we are looking at having a beginners group and an advanced group; sight reading of music is required

Ministries
> Help with youth - though we have a youth director, we can always use adult helpers and chaperons for UMY and youth activities
> Missions (local) - we sometimes do mission work locally for church members in need or the community
> Mission trips - the Louisiana Conference has multiple mission trips throughout the US and world all year long; let us know if you are interested in helping get a group together from our church to go on a trip
> Running errands for homebound, etc. - add your name to the list of people that can run errands for homebound, shut-ins, etc.
> Family life activities - we have potluck dinners and various family gatherings throughout the year; we can always use help with kitchen work, clean up, etc.; contact Cindy Craft for more informaiton
> Prayer chain - though you may feel you can't help in some of these ways, we can all help with prayer; a list of prayer concerns appears in the Circuit Rider and bulletin
> Will cook food (guests, funeral, etc.) - add your name to the list of people that can provide a dish when needed for special occasions, funerals, etc.
> Photographer - if you can take pictures of special events, we can use those for Sunday mornings, the website, and to keep for our history book; pictures can be posted online (e.g. Flickr) and the link sent in or you can email pictures (check with Tim for more information)
> Special event helper (wedding, funeral, etc.) - we can use someone to help show people around, clean up, etc.
> Help with the Learning Center - though we have a full paid staff, you can help out or just be there to support the UMCLC at special events
> Support for Young Families -
> Grief Ministry (meals, support services) - when a church member loses a loved one, we like to provide food; you can help by adding your name to the list of people who can cook food for such a time; there may also be support services that a bereaved family may need that you can help with
> Hospital Ministry - you can volunteer to visit and/or provide food or support for families in which a member is having minor surgery
> Nursing Home Visitation - if you've ever had a friend or family member in a nursing home, you know how important it is to visit them and let them know they are not forgotten; you can volunteer to visit those who may have once been so active in supporting our church but can no longer attend
> Visitation/Support services for Homebound - though we have a Caring Coordinator, it means so much to the homebound to have members of their church family stop by for a visit or to help them with a task; you can volunteer to visit those who may have once been so active in supporting our church but can no longer attend

Education
> Sunday School teacher - teachers are needed for all age groups, especially children; we need 2 teachers per class for children and youth (the youth director is usually with the youth class); adult classes often have teachers, but they may want a break sometimes; you may also start a new adult class
> Sunday School assistant - since we need 2 adults in every child and youth class, you can help by being there to assist the main teacher
> Substitute SS teacher - at times, a teacher may not be able to attend, so having a list of people that can substitute (at all age levels) is very helpful
> Bible Study leader - while it's been a few years since we had Disciple Bible studies, we would like to start again if we can find leaders
> Vacation Bible School - we need a number of adults and youth to help lead VBS for 1 week each summer

Hospitality
> Greeter - a greeter stands at one of the entrance doors to the sanctuary to greet people coming in and hand them a bulletin; they should also be able to provide help and assistance to visitors
> Usher -
> Visitor contact - you can call and/or visit those who are new guests to our church
> New member sponsor - you can volunteer to be a friend to a new member so that they have someone to contact if they have questions/concerns about their new church
> Bulletin boards - we have several bulletin boards in the hallway of the education building; you can select a board and keep it decorated and updated with current news/events

Facilities
> Yard work - though we have a maintenance staff, we also have a large yard; you may be able to help with work around the yard
> Gardening - sometimes the staff spends so much time tending the yard work, there's no time left for beautifying with plants, flowers, etc.; you can volunteer to take care of a garden area, shrub, etc.
> Cleaning special areas - perhaps you've seen areas along highways where groups volunteered to keep a stretch of the road clean; you can do the same thing for an area of the church, volunteering to make keeping an area (closet, choir room, kitchen, etc.) clean your special project
> Special skills - if you have special skills (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, AC), perhaps you can help with small tasks to lessen the maintenance costs of the church

Office
> Preparing mailings- besides the weekly Circuit Rider mailing, there are several other mailings throughout the year; you may be able to help our office staff with printing, copying, adding labels, and folding items to be mailed
> Telephoning - at different times and for different occasions, we may need to call a number of people; if you can use a phone, you can help with this task
> Office volunteer - if you have free time during the day, the office may be able to use your help
> Publicity - different church groups may need help with writing articles for the Circuit Rider; we also may need help getting articles in the Houma Courier; you may also be able to help with posting signs for events around the church
