PASTOR’S MESSAGE
"Is God Punishing Us?”
Someone asked me, before Hurricane Rita hit,  if God was trying to tell us something through the one/two punch of back to back storms.  Although Terrebonne Parish (which ironically means “good earth”) was spared a direct hit, storm surge flooding, levee topping and levee breaches put water over the lower third of the parish.  Something like 9,800 homes flooded.  Is God trying to punish us?
I believe that storms happen.  Laws of nature provide environments for storms to form and strengthen and move and make landfall.  To suggest that God sends a storm to one community and not another suggests that God uses storms to punish communities for their sins.  Jesus said that “It rains on just and the unjust.”  Paul said “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
What then can we learn from the storms which have been coming our way?
* In the battle of humans versus nature–nature wins!  Channeling the Mississippi River by a levee system made New Orleans a bowl.  The Gulf’s waters are a degree warmer, fueling stronger storms.
* When officials say evacuate–evacuate.  Lives are being saved because people are heeding warnings.  Who wanted to stay in a flooded house without power anyway?
* People are more important than possessions.  It is heartbreaking to see people going back to flooded homes and finding nothing to salvage.  And yet, at least they are alive and able to go back.
* Storms bring out the best and the worst in people.  The worst: looting, price gouging, hoarding and the like.  The best: pulling together, helping strangers, random acts of kindness.
Many of us came out of the storm okay.  Perhaps the question we ought to be asking is “How can we serve God by helping others made in God’s image?”
                                                                       Peace!  Barry
