Our beloved church and parsonage survived the storm with limited damage to our buildings, but great damage to our trees and grounds. Check our web site for pictures. We’ll be cutting limbs and moving debris to the side of the road for quite a while. Come and work when you have the time. Talk with me if you don’t know where to start.
This Sunday, the Rev. Darryl Tate, the head of our Conference Disaster Response Team, will be with us at our 11:00 A.M. service. He will give a brief announcement about what our conference and UMCOR are doing, and what we can do to help our neighbors.

Let us know of your needs for assistance. We want to help you and help our neighbors. We as a congregation can help a few, but our connection to the conference and the general church is a very large pipeline of assistance and workers.
The first thing we need in our area is an assessment of the help needed. If you are available and are interested in being an assessor, contact me immediately. For those able, we will travel to Lafayette on Thursday for a day of training where we will learn how to travel in pairs to affected areas of our community to determine what type of assistance is needed. We will return to Houma and train others who will join us in this preliminary stage of recovery. The big pipeline of our connection will focus resources, experience, and labor to rebuild our community.
First United Methodist Church of Houma will be a leader in rebuilding the homes in our community. We will be a gathering site for others in our connection to go to work in our larger community. A shower trailer will be built in Houston and delivered here in a couple of weeks for the 50 or so volunteers who will come to work from our church.
I only have praise and thanksgiving for the thousands of volunteers and out of town workers who have come to our community to reconnect our lines of communication & electrical power; for those who are feeding the workers and residents; for the corps of engineers who are covering houses; and for good neighbors, who have not waited to be asked to offer assistance to help one another. God is very pleased with His children.
I look forward to being with each of you on Sunday as our worshiping community gathers for worship at 8:45 and 11 A.M. We have so many reasons to praise God.
Blessings on each of you,
Bro. Don |
