PASTOR’S NOTES

As I sit at my desk today, it is difficult to know what to write or to focus on.  Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 25th.  Certainly we could not enjoy the freedoms we have as a nation today without the faithful soldiers who gave their lives defending our country and its values.  Next Sunday we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the rebirth of this congregation.  It is important that we learn what reignited the “fire” giving a 2nd birth to this Houma church.  We will have a great celebration with food, story, song, and fellowship following the 11:00 service.

By claiming our heritage we will be better prepared to live into our future.  Our heritage includes this Sunday’s commemoration of John Wesley’s Aldersgate experience.  On Wednesday, May 24, 1738, John Wesley experienced his “heart strangely warmed.”  This is the day he experienced the confirmation of his salvation by the grace of God.  This experience was crucial for his life and became a touchstone for the Wesleyan movement.

I like the quote attributed to Yogi Berra, that “The future ain’t what it used to be.”  Before we come to know Jesus as our Lord, our future focus is fuzzy and uncertain, if not dismal.  But when Jesus comes into our hearts and we begin to follow in his ways, our futures change giving us both comfort now and assurance for eternity.  I stand in awe of God’s amazing grace, and the awesomeness of God’s continuing creation.  I look forward to worshiping with you Sunday as we claim our wonderful heritage, praising God for those who walked the path before us, and seeking his strength and guidance on our path for those who will follow us.
                                   Bless You,  Pastor Don

REMEMBER TO REMEMBER
One Memorial Day, some children were asked what the holiday meant to them.
“That’s the day the swimming pool opens!” answered one eager boy.  What he didn’t realize or appreciate was that
he can freely go the pool because more
than one million people have put their lives on the line to preserve America’s democracy.  Many of them have died so citizens of other countries might also enjoy the privileges of political, social and economic freedom.
Memorial Day is our opportunity to pause and remember the sacrifices of many of America’s best citizens.  They made the supreme sacrifice on our behalf, so please remember to honor these heroes on May 25th.                                           -NewsletterNewsletter
