PASTOR’S MESSAGE
"Anything But the Blues”
Sam invited me to a rock concert at The House of Blues in New Orleans.  John Cleary, a New Orleans pianist, opened for Bonnie Raitt.  Sam got free tickets by promising to write a 500-word review for her campus newspaper.  I was flattered that she asked me to go with her.  I was the first person she thought of asking.  She had been subjected to so much Bonnie Raitt music as a child, she couldn’t think of anyone who would enjoy the concert more.
Raitt is a Harvard educated, redheaded rich girl who was educated in the blues by moving to play with Mississippi musicians.  Don’t you know that these musicians playing in smokey small-town delta bars had to be very surprised by her interest in their music.  (God works in mysterious ways!)  Raitt has mastered a slide guitar style all her own, and has a  distinctive voice which is pure and gravely at the same time.  Needless to say I enjoyed the show.
What was of interest to me is the venue in which she played.  It was much like a church with a three-sided balcony.  The main floor was about the size of our sanctuary.  The main difference was that there were no pews or chairs.  Instead, most concert goers stood for as long as five hours during the show.  (Because we got there after the show started, Sam and I only had to stand for three hours!)  No one complained.  They stood and danced and swayed to the music.  Few people left before three encores!
Our attendance is down a bit since we moved into our temporary worship space.  It is crowded and uncomfortable and confusing and we don’t know where to sit.  But you know what?  At least we have something for you to sit on so you don’t have to stand for an hour.
I hope that you will make your plans to attend one of our three Sunday services.  It might be the cure for your blues.
                                                                       Peace!  Barry

PSALM READING FOR SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the LORD are sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.  10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb.  11 Morever by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.  12 But who can detect their errors?  Clear me from hidden faults.  13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent; do not let them have dominion over me.  Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.  14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

1 The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.  2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.  3 There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; 4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.  In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun, 5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy.  6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and nothing is hid from its heat.
