What is a seminary?
A seminary is basically a college for those
that want to become ministers. Some are associated with denominations,
while others are independent. We have two colleges in Louisiana that
are connected to The United Methodist Church ... Centenary in Shreveport
and Dilliard in New Orleans ... but they are not seminaries. The
13 UM seminaries
are:
Boston

Another common seminary for Louisiana
residents is Asbury Theological
Seminary. Though not directly UM-related, it is a Wesleyan school
and it produces more UM pastors per year than any other seminary.
Do you have to have a degree from a seminary to become a preacher?
No. You can also become what is called a local pastor by taking a
Course of Study. For more information on becoming a minister, check
out our Conference webpage.
There are also events such as Discerning
the Call and Exploration for people who are contemplating
a career in the ministry. |
